August 15, 2025 – Today, Barking Dog, the instrumental trio featuring drummers Jack Irons (Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Anthony LoGerfo (Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts, Promise of The Real), along with multi-instrumentalist Micah Nelson (Particle Kid, Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts), releases their debut EP, Elements, via Loosegroove Records. The six-track collection is accompanied by a video for the set opener “Heat of the Sun.”

Barking Dog formed through a shared interest in rhythm, Neil Young, and dogs. Irons and LoGerfo met in 2016 at the Ohana Festival, bonding over music and life. They stayed in touch, and by 2018 began exchanging drum and percussion tracks that would ultimately become the foundation for Elements. LoGerfo’s “meditation grooves” provided the rhythmic base, which Irons expanded upon with experimental drums and percussion. Nelson was later enlisted to add his signature sonic layers of guitar, synth, and bass.

“At the time I was studying with drum guru Efrain Toro, who taught me that rhythm, if done correctly, creates harmony,” says LoGerfo. “He told me to meditate on the two and three, which would create a universal connection to earth sounds and visions from nature. That became the guiding principle behind the project.”

In 2023, Irons and LoGerfo recorded together for the first time at Irons’ home studio to complete Elements. Irons added steel drum as a nod to his work on Pearl Jam’s No Codeand Yield. The recordings were then sent to Nelson, who once again contributed additional layers of sound. The EP was mixed by Adam Hawkins, tying together Barking Dog’s work over the previous five years into one collective musical statement.

Each track on Elements is named after a natural element, reflecting the group’s collaborative process, while the cover art was created by Micah Nelson. The band’s name honors their dogs: Charms, Plato, and Tsuki, thus the record was dedicated to them.

“Anthony came up with some very cool grooves. It was easy to find myself fitting in and doing some experimental sounds to create a bed under what he’d sent me. Later in the project we played together at my studio and that was really nice,” says Irons. “Micah really brought the project home with his sense of experimentation. Finally, the title came about as I live in a highly populated dog neighborhood with my dog being a loud meet-and-greeter. I was sitting there listening to him bark away and it became pretty obvious to throw it in the mix as we all have a great love of our pups. We’re all so happy with its outcome.”
